For Storr, Battle Is Finally Joined

Share

King goalie Jamie Storr got his first look at shots fired in anger Wednesday night in San Jose, not that there were all that many or that they were all that angry in the Kings’ 3-2 exhibition victory.

Storr, who signed a three-year contract 12 days after training camp opened, faced only eight shots in the first two periods of his first start, 18 in all. San Jose turned up the volume in the third period, getting goals from Joe Murphy--on a rebound when Storr ventured too far from the crease--and Bob Rouse--on the power play.

Two goals by Glen Murray and one by Josh Green gave the Kings the victory, and Green’s--which came in the first period--did not hurt his chances of making the team as a rookie.

Coach Larry Robinson pronounced Green ahead of Olli Jokinen in the rookie sweepstakes, with only one likely to make the team, the other probably ticketed for Springfield.

Dave Taylor, the King vice president and general manager, said rookie defenseman Mark Visheau presented the most difficult decision in compiling a list of 18 skaters and two goalies who will be exempt from Monday’s waiver draft. The list is due in the NHL office today at 1 p.m.

Visheau, who dislocated his left thumb in a fight with the Mighty Ducks’ Stu Grimson, has been the “biggest surprise” of training camp this year, according to Taylor.

The Kings will have to expose “five or six” players to the draft, said Taylor, adding that unsigned defenseman Aki Berg does not have to be one of them. The team has requested an exemption from the NHL because Berg has a contract in Finland. The Kings are continuing to pursue Berg. If they sign him, they will have to expose one of the 18 players on their list to waivers.
