Granny Goes the Distance

Share

Marilyn Brokaw is not your average football booster/grandmother.

Two years ago, she moved from Mission Viejo and bought a condominium in Valencia so she could attend Hart High games and watch grandson Scott Hunt, an Indian linebacker.

She hasn’t missed one of Hunt’s games since.

“I’m a sports nut,” she said. “I’m the only grandmother on the street who watches every single NFL game on Sundays.”

Palmdale picked: Palmdale High’s football team has been selected to appear on KABC-TV’s Monday Night Live.

Coach Jeff Williams and the Falcons will be on the Oct. 19 show, which airs following the Monday Night Football game.

Back scratched: Canyon running back Jimmy Perry, who leads the Cowboys with 295 yards in 49 carries, has a bruised thigh and was held out of Friday night’s game against Westlake.

Perry suffered the injury last week during a 21-10 victory over Crescenta Valley.

“He didn’t tell anybody,” Coach Larry Mohr said. “He came in Saturday limping.”

Mohr said that Perry might have been able to play through it, but the coach didn’t want to take a chance in a nonleague game.

Short stint: The great B.J. Brannan experiment didn’t last very long.

Westlake Coach Jim Benkert said he wanted to get Brannan, who is quarterback Zac Wasserman’s backup, some playing time Friday night against Canyon.

Brannan entered the game in the second quarter, threw three consecutive incomplete passes, and the Warriors punted.

“I wanted to get our No. 2 guy in there purely just to get him ready to play,” Benkert said. “We might need him when the game is on the line in the future.”

A success: The El Camino Real kicking experiment seems to be working.

The Conquistadores, who did not have a kicker in a 12-12 season-opening tie with Dorsey, recruited Ian Kogan off the soccer team.

His conversion attempt was blocked in a 27-6 loss to Westlake last week, then Kogan booted four extra points in the first half against San Fernando Friday night.

Kogan’s only miss came when his team was assessed a 15-yard penalty following a touchdown. His kick hit the goal post.
