La Canada, Led by Turley, Finishes 5th in Tournament

Dutch Turley scored four goals and assisted on two others as the La Canada High boys’ water polo team took a 13-8 victory over Capistrano Valley in the fifth place game of the 32-team Villa Park tournament Saturday at Villa Park High.

Turley, the Spartans’ hole guard, scored one goal in the first quarter and three more in the third quarter to help La Canada tie the game, 7-7, after rallying from first-half deficits of 4-2 and 7-4. He also was a defensive standout, making seven steals and shutting out the two-meter man for Capistrano Valley, the ninth-ranked team in Southern Section Division I.

La Canada (9-3), the top-ranked team in the Division III coaches’ poll, also got three goals and three steals from Michael McDay. Tristan Nyby and Charles Chang each added two goals. Goalie Larry Masson had 11 saves.

La Canada advanced earlier Saturday to play Capistrano Valley with a 6-5 victory over Righetti, the second-ranked team in Division IV.

Royal 9, Tustin 6--Casey Gilpin had three goals and Ryan Apperson had three assists as the Highlanders (10-5) won the San Luis Obispo tournament for the second consecutive season.

Ventura 14, Damien 4--Mike Derse scored seven goals to lead the Cougars (17-0) to the championship of the Walnut tournament at Walnut High.

Ventura, the top-ranked team in the Division IV coaches’ poll, also got two goals each from Chad Caldwell and Todd Barbosa, and single scores from Jordan Graham, Brett Phillips and Joey Bannon.

The Cougars advanced to the final with a 9-5 victory over Walnut earlier Saturday. Caldwell and Derse each had three goals in that match.

Crescenta Valley 12, Santa Monica 9--Justin Payne scored four goals and assisted on three others to lead the Falcons to the championship of the 16-team El Segundo tournament for the second time in four years.

The Falcons (12-4), ranked sixth in Division III, lost in the tournament’s final game last season. Santa Monica is rated seventh in Division III.

Newbury Park 10, Calabasas 5--Matt Rhodes and Blake Mallen each had four goals and three assists as the Panthers (7-9) won the 11th-place game of the El Segundo tournament.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Stanford Invitational--La Canada showed its readiness to defend its Division III state championship by placing all five scoring runners in the top 20 and registering an 89-point victory in the Division III race.

Sophomore Kim Bonino led the way for the Spartans by finishing sixth with a 19:05 clocking on the 5,000-meter course, and senior Kim Garnic finished 11th in 19:30. La Canada scored 62 points and runner-up Foothill Redding had 151.

Louisville and Nordhoff elected to move up one division for the meet, and placed 10th and 11th.

Melissa McBain of Thousand Oaks placed 10th in the Division I race at 19:20 and the Lancers placed 10th overall. Camarillo was 14th and Ventura was 16th.

In Division IV, Flintridge Sacred Heart placed ninth, Oak Park was 10th and Notre Dame finished 16th.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Stanford Invitational--Junior Josh Spiker of Ventura clocked 15:47 on the 5,000-meter course to place second in the Division I race and Notre Dame placed three runners in the Division IV top 20 for a second-place finish.

Kevin Lelles led the way for the Knights with a 16:07 third-place effort.

Ventura, which is not ranked in the Southern Section Division I poll, finished 11th in the team competition, and eighth-ranked Thousand Oaks was 15th. Junior Seth Neumiller led the Lancers with a 15:58 eighth-place effort.

St. Francis and Nordhoff placed third and fourth in the Division III race. Sophomore Eric Chaves was sixth in 16:24 and senior Dan Chaves was 13th in 16:36 for the Golden Knights.

Flintridge Prep finished first out of six teams in the Division V race.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Cornerstone Christian def. Thacher, 15-4, 15-11, 15-13--Senior Alizabeth Johnston had 10 kills for the Eagles (7-1, 2-1) in a Condor League victory at Cornerstone Christian.
