Northridge Makes Shots Count, Claims 3-2 Victory

Despite being outshot, Cal State Northridge claimed a 3-2 victory over San Francisco on Saturday in the Santa Clara men’s soccer tournament at Santa Clara.

Federico Arroyo’s unassisted goal in the 58th minute gave the Matadors (5-4) a 3-1 lead.

San Francisco (1-9), which won the five previous meetings between the teams, scored the game’s final goal with two minutes remaining and held a 17-7 shot advantage.

Northridge took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when San Francisco defender Brandon Jensen knocked a cross by Matador Mike Preis into his own goal. Three minutes later, Northridge built a 2-0 advantage when William Diaz scored on an assist from Arroyo.

San Francisco scored 11 minutes into the second half on a goal by Fabio Pires.

Northridge goalkeeper Christian Perez made four saves.

In another men’s soccer game:

The Master’s 2, Briar Cliff (Iowa) 1--Paul Dojo and Lucas Bongarra each scored in a two-minute span of the first half and the Mustangs claimed their third consecutive victory in a nonconference match at Briar Cliff.

Dojo scored from eight yards on a pass from Eric Benitez in the 10th minute. Dojo passed to Bongarra, who headed in the ball from 10 yards in the 12th minute as The Master’s took a 2-0 halftime lead.

Goalkeeper Eric Pattison made 10 saves for The Master’s, allowing only a second-half goal by Ryan Spar.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 12, Mount San Antonio 12--Josh Wilson’s two-point goal with 45 seconds remaining lifted the Monarchs (7-7-1) into a tie for the Cypress tournament title at Cypress College.

Goalkeeper Andrew Langer, a freshman from Notre Dame High, made 11 saves for Valley.
