No. 2 Marina Turns Back Edison

Marina, the defending Division I state champion and currently ranked second in the Southern Section Division I-A, avoided an upset and defeated host Edison, 12-15, 15-9, 15-7, 13-15, 15-13, in a Sunset League girls’ volleyball match Tuesday.

Chanda McLeod had 31 kills and Ashlee Phillips had 48 assists for Marina (5-1, 1-0 in league), which took a 9-0 lead in the fifth game before Edison closed to within 14-13. But an Edison hitting error gave Marina a side out and a kill by McLeod sealed the victory.

Christina Patterson had 24 kills and Lauren Belcher had 17 kills and 10 blocks for Edison (2-5, 0-1).

In other Sunset League matches:

Esperanza 3, Los Alamitos 0--Heather Preston had nine kills, Julia Rex had eight and Toni Anderson had 32 assists for Esperanza (4-2, 1-0), which won, 15-5, 15-7, 15-4.

Huntington Beach 3, Fountain Valley 1--Denee Ezerins had 18 kills for the host Oilers (3-4, 0-1), who won, 15-5, 15-4, 13-15, 15-4. Natalie Snowden had 11 kills for Fountain Valley (0-6, 0-1).

In the Century League:

Foothill 3, El Modena 0--Foothill rallied from a 13-9 deficit in the first game and went on to win, 15-13, 15-9, 15-9. Danielle Bauer had 14 kills and Becky Radomski had 11 for Foothill (4-3, 1-0). Michelle Armstrong led El Modena (2-5, 0-1) with 15.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 3, Kennedy 0--Dusty Creager had nine kills for host Cypress (3-2, 1-0), which won, 15-4, 15-8, 15-4. Cira Wright had 10 kills for Kennedy (5-2, 0-1), ranked ninth in Division II-AA. Cypress is unranked.

Katella 3, Century 1--Kelly Cornelius had 12 kills for host Katella (3-4, 1-0), which won, 15-5, 15-8, 14-16, 15-8. Julianna Portillo had 12 kills for Century (2-5, 0-1).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 3, Troy 0--Amanda Siler had 11 kills for host La Habra (6-1, 1-0). The Highlanders, top-ranked in Division II-A, won 15-4, 15-3, 15-6.

Tatiana Kalache had 13 kills for Troy (4-5, 0-1).

Sonora 3, Buena Park 0--Laura Siapin had five kills for Sonora (4-1, 1-0), which won, 15-8, 15-10, 15-9. Buena Park is 8-1, 0-1.

Sunny Hills 3, Fullerton 0--Stevie Nicholas had 17 kills and two blocks and Jasmine Raphael had 10 kills and two blocks for unranked Sunny Hills (7-5, 1-0) in the 15-7, 15-11, 15-5 victory. Fullerton is ranked ninth in Division III-AA.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 3, Savanna 0--Katie Eatherton had seven kills for Valencia (5-2, 1-0), which won, 15-2, 15-2, 15-2. Valencia is ranked fifth in Division II-A.

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 3, Laguna Hills 0--Katie Brandt had 14 kills and Amy Buchen had 11 to lead visiting University (4-3, 1-0) in the 15-12, 15-7, 15-11 victory.

Sarah Phan had eight kills for Laguna Hills (5-2, 0-1).

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 3, Mission Viejo 0--Becky Warnick had 14 kills and Andrea Delsigne had 41 assists for Capistrano Valley (9-0, 1-0), which won, 17-15, 15-5, 15-3.

Mater Dei 3, San Clemente 0--Lindsay Pavlik had 14 kills and seven blocks for host Mater Dei (3-2, 1-0), which won, 15-10, 15-10, 15-13. Mater Dei is ranked third in Division II-AA.
