Re “Pupils Trumpet Their Indignation at Elephants’ Fate,” Oct. 9:
The parents and teachers of the Crossroads School students who recently visited the L.A. Zoo must be proud. Such well-informed, well-mannered and charming young people are certainly a testament to the benefits of a $15,000-a-year private education. Spared the trauma of public school in order to learn to disparage the mentally ill, leap to conclusions, diagnose animal “mistreatment” at a glance, speak abusively to public servants who spend every day actually caring for animals for pipsqueak salaries, shout epithets at adults, and insult and disparage a man’s mother to his face. What a credit to the intellect and values we all hope to encourage in our children.

Those of us who consider the L.A. Zoo a prison for animals are giving the young people of Crossroads and New Roads schools a standing ovation!
