Brymer Busy at Sectionals

Tiffany Brymer, a recent transfer to Rio Mesa High, and Abigail Spears advanced to the girls’ 18 final match of the 96th annual Southern California Junior Sectional Doubles Championships at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Brymer and Spears, the top-seeded team in the division, will play second-seeded Kelly Ramirez and Stacey Tomkiewicz of Rancho Palos Verdes in the final at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Brymer and another partner, Carl McCafferty of Highland, also advanced to today’s quarterfinals in the tournament’s 18 mixed doubles division.

BASKETBALL

Jennifer Solee has been selected girls’ coach at Lancaster High. Solee, an assistant at Palmdale the last three seasons, replaces Orbin Love.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Thousand Oaks High girls’ cross-country team, bolstered by its victory in the large schools race of the Clovis Invitational cross-country meet at Woodward Park in Fresno last Saturday, is ranked third behind Esperanza and Yucaipa in the state Division I rankings.

The La Canada girls’ team is ranked first in Division III, Louisville is third in Division IV and Desert Christian is second in Division V.

In the boys’ polls, Nordhoff is ranked second in Division IV with Notre Dame third. Saugus slipped from third to fourth in Division I rankings, despite winning at Clovis by 48 points.

MISCELLANY

Laffapalooza, a variety show hosted by comedian Bruce Baum, will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza to raise money for Lancer athletics. The event raised about $13,000 each of the past two years.

Comedians Tommy Davidson (“In Living Color”), Jimmy Walker (“Good Times”) and Bill Engvall will appear. Thousand Oaks High students will also perform.

Tickets are $30 and $20, and can be purchased at TicketMaster and at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza box office.

SOCCER

Jackie Fodor, a Chatsworth High forward with 75 goals in three varsity seasons, has committed to USC, her father, Vic Fodor, said.

Fodor scored 24 goals and helped the Chancellors to their third consecutive City Section 4-A title last season.

AUTO RACING

Ron Hornaday Jr., a longtime Palmdale resident who won the inaugural NASCAR Craftsman Truck championship in 1995, holds an 18-point lead over defending series champion Jack Sprague entering Sunday’s 300-lap race at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield.

Hornaday, 40, has won more races than any other driver in the four-year history of the truck series.

Three races remain, including the season finale Nov. 8 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The NASCAR Winston West series will hold a 250-lap race today at Mesa Marin. Sean Woodside of Saugus trails points leader Kevin Harvick of Bakersfield by 88 points.

SWIMMING

Cal State Northridge men’s and women’s swim coach Barry Schreifels has been appointed the school’s director of aquatics.

Schreifels will continue as the Matadors’ swim coach and also serve as women’s water polo coach next season.

Lauralyn Beckley has been hired as an assistant coach for the Northridge men’s and women’s swim teams. Beckley swam for Virginia Tech.
