Prep Football Update

A look at the Southern Section divisions in which Orange County’s large-school football teams compete (rankings are from Southern Section divisional polls):

Second-ranked Los Alamitos, which defeated No. 6 Esperanza, 22-17, on Friday, wasn’t the only team in the division to knock off a ranked opponent. No. 8 Fontana A.B. Miller won a Citrus Belt opener, routing No. 10 Redlands, 49-14.

The Orange County-only grouping drops from Division V to Division VI this year, and exchanged the Orange League for the Pacific Coast League. The Sea View League still dominates, however. The top five teams in last week’s rankings were all Sea View teams, although no more than four can advance to the playoffs. Only four other teams in the division have a winning record.

CENTURY

With La Mirada and La Verne Bonita the top two teams in the rankings, the prospects for Orange County teams don’t appear good. La Mirada of the Suburban League advanced to last year’s championship game, before losing to Laguna Hills, and Bonita of the Valle Vista League has won its six games by an average score of 42-8.

FREEWAY

Standings: Buena Park 1-0, 1-5; Fullerton 1-0, 2-4; La Habra 1-0, 2-4; Sonora 0-1, 2-4; Sunny Hills 0-1, 2-4; Troy 0-1, 3-3.
