Littlerock Launches Solid Tradition

Antelope Valley High’s coaches and players regularly credit “Mays Field Magic” as a factor in their success.

Even when the Antelopes are on the road, they bring along turf from Mays Field, their home stadium, for good luck.

Visiting Littlerock attempted to answer that tradition Friday night by bringing a two-pound rock similar to the three-ton hunk of granite that sits at the entrance of its home stadium.

Each Lobo touched the rock before the game.

“I hope I have convinced them that the rock possesses magical qualities that far outweigh anything here at Mays Field,” Bauer said.

Injury: Antelope Valley linebacker Mark Sutton sustained a neck injury during a third-quarter kick return and was taken by paramedics to Antelope Valley Hospital. Sutton, who laid on the field for 24 minutes, complained to coaches that he could not feel his fingers.

Fewer hands: Grant wide receiver Robert Mitchell, who had 19 of the Lancers’ 37 receptions through six games, has been removed from the team for disciplinary reasons.

Legend grows: Florida State is after Hart quarterback Kyle Boller, offering him a recruiting visit when his season has ended. Florida State offensive coordinator Mark Richt spoke by phone Thursday with Boller, who already has scholarship offers from California, Oregon and Colorado.

Familiar place: For the first time since he resigned as Crespi coach after the 1988 season, Bill Redell will return to the Encino campus next Friday to face his old school.

Redell, who guided Crespi to a Southern Section championship in 1986, coaches St. Francis.

“It’s their homecoming,” Redell said. “They picked somebody they can beat up on.”

Redell’s sons--Randy, Billy and Ronnie--played at Crespi. Billy and Ronnie are expected to attend the game. Asked which team his sons will root for, Redell said, “They’ll probably wait to see who’s ahead.”

Poor get poorer: Already facing the imposing task of going up against high-powered Hart, Burroughs found that running back Marcio Barrios and 325-pound lineman Vidal Montano were ruled academically ineligible.

Also missing was starting receiver Keith Jarbo, who sustained a broken jaw in last week’s loss to Valencia. Top running back Randy Beckmann is out with a broken hand and quarterback Joe Kroells was benched for disciplinary reasons.
