Expansion of Airport Shuttle Service Urged

Serving almost half a million more people than when it opened 23 years ago, the Van Nuys FlyAway is ready for a make-over, said a report from the Board of Airport Commissioners.

The FlyAway, a park-and-ride terminal at Van Nuys Airport that shuttles travelers by bus to Los Angeles International Airport, includes 1,900 parking spaces that sometimes fill up before dawn during peak travel times such as Memorial Day weekend.

About 1,965 people use the FlyAway on an average day. Last year, 710,622 passengers were served there.

The report, prepared at the request of Councilwoman Laura Chick, concluded that “additional parking and a new expanded terminal can be justified to serve existing and future demand.” It recommended further studying of options for expanded services, such as baggage and check-in and a visitor information center.

Los Angeles World Airports, the city’s airport department, said it would hire a consultant to conduct a 12-week study of the FlyAway.
