All day: Film Festival

Cinema Judaica ‘98: The fourth annual Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival, which kicks off Sunday, will feature several films that focus on the Hungarian-Jewish experience. There will be several U.S. and world premieres, including the closing-night film “The Photographer,” a new documentary from Poland. As there was last year, there will be a festival within a festival--the Sephardic Film Festival--sponsored by the Sephardic Educational Center.

2 & 7 pm: Dance

Before “Riverdance” or “Lord of the Dance” existed, champion Irish dancer Mark Howard was experimenting with changing a musty old folk-dance form into a vibrant theater-dance idiom. Some experts even claim he started the whole craze, founding his Trinity Academy of Irish Dance in 1985 and the Trinity Irish Dance Company five years later. The 22 dancers are most celebrated for tapping out complex syncopated rhythms, and they never, ever use prerecorded tap tracks, as “Riverdance” has done. Like their musical accompaniments, the sounds of their steps are live.
