Cinema Judaica ‘98: The fourth annual Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival, which kicks off Sunday, will feature several films that focus on the Hungarian-Jewish experience. Hungarian director Judit Elek will be on hand to discuss her films “Awakening” and “A Free Man: The Life of Erno Fisch” after the screenings. There will be several U.S. and world premieres, including the closing-night film “The Photographer,” a new documentary from Poland. As there was last year, there will be a festival within a festival--the Sephardic Film Festival--sponsored by the Sephardic Educational Center.

2 & 7 pm: Dance

Before “Riverdance” or “Lord of the Dance” existed, champion Irish dancer Mark Howard was experimenting with changing a musty old folk-dance form into a vibrant theater-dance idiom. Some experts even claim he started the whole craze, founding his Trinity Academy of Irish Dance in 1985 and the Trinity Irish Dance Company five years later. The 22 dancers are most celebrated for tapping out complex syncopated rhythms, and they never, ever use prerecorded tap tracks, as “Riverdance” has done. Like their musical accompaniments, the sounds of their steps are live.

L.A.-based magazine La Banda Elastica marks its anniversary each year with a notable rock en espanol concert at Universal Amphitheatre. Chile’s La Ley headlines this time, joined by Plastilina Mosh, Illya Kuryaki & the Valderramas and Pastilla.

Front Line Assembly has been a head-rattling force in industrial-electronic music since 1986. With a new compilation-plus-remixes album, “Monument,” in the stores, the Vancouver outfit blitzes the Southland with three concerts.

Elmarie Wendel, the show biz veteran who plays “3rd Rock From the Sun’s” nutty landlady Mrs. Dubcek, performs her zany cabaret show, combining comic stylings of songs by Fats Waller, Cole Porter, Gershwin, Sondheim and others, with her off-the-wall observations.
