Cal State Northridge senior running back Melvin Blue has been suspended for the game against Weber State on Saturday because he violated team rules, Coach Ron Ponciano said.

Blue, who leads the Matadors in rushing with 462 yards and seven touchdowns in 128 carries, did not practice Wednesday and will not return to practice until Sunday.

“This is the first guy I’ve had to suspend,” Ponciano said. “But sometimes it has to be done.”

Mike Pringle of the Montreal Alouettes, a running back from Kennedy High and Cal State Fullerton, became the first Canadian Football League player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season in a 58-44 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sunday in Montreal.

Pringle gained 102 yards in 18 carries, giving him 2,064 yards and eclipsing his league record of 1,972 yards set in 1994 when he played for the Baltimore Stallions.

Alemany High is among three schools to file an appeal with the Southern Section over league realignment proposed by the Catholic Athletic Assn., section Commissioner Dean Crowley said.

Alemany and St. Paul appealed placement in the Del Rey League for football, and Serra appealed placement in the Mission League for all sports except boys’ basketball and football.

The executive council of the Southern Section will hear the appeal when it meets at 1 p.m. next Wednesday at the Sequoia Athletic Club in Buena Park.

The Catholic Athletic Assn. voted Oct. 21 on new league alignments that would begin in the fall of 1999. It placed Alemany in the Del Rey League with powerhouses Bishop Amat and Loyola.

Reserved seating on the 50-yard line is being sold for Calabasas High’s homecoming football game Friday night against Santa Paula.

Tickets for the special seating cost $5. Proceeds from the sales will go to the school’s cheerleading squad.

BASKETBALL

Stephanie Wilson has been hired as girls’ coach at Flintridge Sacred Heart High.

Wilson replaces Carl Nakagawa and becomes the Tologs’ third coach in three seasons.

BASEBALL

Stu Zucker has been hired as coach at Highland Hall High.

Zucker replaces Bill Ruehl, who guided the Hawks to postseason appearances in 1997 and ’98.

TENNIS

Glenn Michibata of Woodland Hills defeated Martin Rozpedski of Palm Desert, 6-4, 7-5, to win the men’s singles division of the Southern California Open Sectional Championships on Sunday at the Claremont Club.

Arthur Tombakian of Glendale and Vince Mackey of South Pasadena won the men’s doubles division by beating Trent Aaron of Los Angeles and Jim Martineau of Rancho Palos Verdes, 6-4, 7-5.

TRIATHLON

Michelle Palmisano, who played basketball at Thousand Oaks High and Vanderbilt, won the women’s 20-24 age group in the United States Triathlon Assn. championships in Oceanside on Sunday.

Palmisano clocked 2:28:39 in the event that included a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40k bike ride and a 10k run.

MISCELLANY

Jerry Mike and Don Shoemaker have been named co-athletic directors at Glendale High.

They replace Bruce Dalton, who took a position with the Glendale Unified School District.
