Westlake Gives Moorpark a Healthy Whipping, 35-0

So this is what Westlake High looks like when everyone is healthy.

Travis Campbell makes diving, one-handed grabs. Mike Seidman catches passes over the middle and drags smaller defenders downfield.

Oh, and one more thing.

On a night when Westlake’s talented receivers finally played at 100%, running back Julian Lambert showed some moves of his own, scoring three touchdowns and the Warriors jumped all over Moorpark, 35-0, in a Marmonte League game on Friday.

Westlake (6-1-1, 2-1-1 in league play) righted the ship after losing to Newbury Park and tying Thousand Oaks the last two weeks.

“There were a lot of nerves on this team but we felt like we were starting over,” quarterback Zac Wasserman said.

“With all my receivers healthy, all I have to do is throw the ball and they’ll catch it.”

Campbell, back from a sore shoulder, led the team with six catches for 107 yards. His one-handed grab set up Lambert’s first touchdown, a 16-yard run in the first quarter.

Seidman, back from a sore hip, made a 13-yard catch minutes later to put Westlake in position for Lambert’s next score, a twisting 22-yard run in which he broke no fewer than five tackles.

“The passing game opens up the run,” said Lambert, who carried 11 times for 115 yards. “The defense can’t key on one thing.”

While the Warriors were feeling good, Moorpark (6-2, 3-2) looked down in the dumps for a second consecutive week, generating only 116 yards of offense.

Once again the Musketeers had no passing game, allowing Westlake to stack the line.

Running back Art Garcia of Moorpark was held to one yard in nine carries.

Even when Moorpark recovered Wasserman’s fumble deep in Westlake territory, they could not score.

Westlake, meanwhile, marched up and down the field at a healthy clip.

Wasserman, who completed 14 of 22 passes for 213 yards, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Campbell for a 21-0 lead at halftime. He opened the third quarter with a four-yard scoring pass to Chris Catalano.

After Moorpark fumbled the kickoff, Lambert scored his third touchdown from 17 yards out and Westlake pulled most of its starters in the fourth quarter.

“This week we felt 100%,” Campbell said. “Everything’s going good.”
