Harvard-Westlake Takes Double Dip

Harvard-Westlake High advanced to the semifinals of the John Felix State Invitational water polo tournament with victories over Sacramento Jesuit and Clovis West on Friday at Bellarmine Prep in San Jose.

The Wolverines (18-2), ranked No. 5 in Southern Section Division I, play No. 2 Newport Harbor today at 8 a.m. with an opportunity to advance to the final in one of the top water polo tournaments in the nation.

Peter Hudnut and Jason Malinsky each scored two goals in an 8-4 victory over Clovis West in the second round.

Goalie Joe Axlerad had 10 saves, holding Clovis West scoreless in the third quarter.

Hudnut and Brian Ault each had three goals for the Wolverines in an 11-5 victory over Jesuit in the first round.

In other water polo games:

Agoura 14, Thousand Oaks 10--The Chargers rallied from a 2-0 deficit behind five goals in the third quarter by Mike Campbell and five steals by Dusty Sloan to clinch the Marmonte League title at Agoura.

It is the first league title for the Chargers (15-7, 7-0 in league play) since 1994, when they shared it with Royal, and the first time in 18 seasons the Highlanders have not won at least a share of the title.

Campbell had eight goals and goalie Justin Rosa made seven saves for Agoura.

Nordhoff 9, Oxnard 4--Danny Shepherd scored five goals for the Rangers in a Frontier League game at Oxnard.

Nordhoff (7-13, 4-3) earned the No. 4 seeding in the league tournament and a rematch against the fifth-seeded Yellowjackets in the first round Wednesday.

Flintridge Prep 12, La Salle 8--Sam Tyre scored three of his five goals in the fourth quarter and the Rebels (16-6, 7-2) clinched second place in the Prep League with a victory at La Salle.

Tyre has 83 goals this season.

Matt Klekner, who scored twice, including the Rebels’ other goal in a four-goal fourth quarter, has a team-high 90 goals.

Burroughs 32, Mark Keppel 6--Jason Falitz scored 10 goals in an Almont League game at Burroughs (17-7, 3-2), giving him 162 to break Alfonso Tucay’s 1996 school record by one goal.

The Indians led, 20-6, at halftime, and played mostly junior varsity players in the second half.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Westlake 10, Righetti 8--Westlake won the final four doubles matches, rallying from an 8-6 deficit to win a nonleague match of top-ranked teams at North Ranch Country Club.

Sisters Nicole and Brittany Jensky (42-0) swept three doubles sets for Westlake (18-0), the top-ranked team in Southern Section Division III.

Righetti (18-2) is ranked No. 1 in Division II.

Hoover 11, Glendale 7--The victory by the Tornadoes (5-5 in league) forces a playoff with the Dynamiters (8-11, 5-5) to decide third place in the Pacific League. A coin flip will determine the site for the playoff Monday.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Crescenta Valley def. Arcadia, 15-13, 15-10, 16-14--Tracy Jackson had 11 kills and 12 digs to help the Falcons clinch their first Pacific League title since 1987.

Joanna Lange had 15 digs for Crescenta Valley (13-3, 9-0).

Campbell Hall def. Brentwood, 15-9, 16-14, 8-15, 2-15, 15-13--Alexis Kotelko had nine of her 15 kills and Cicely Carew added 10 of her 22 digs in the decisive fifth game for the Vikings (10-6, 4-3) in a Delphic League victory at Campbell Hall.
