City Seeks Designation for Federal Assistance

Share

City officials are making a bid to turn the city into an empowerment zone that would make it eligible for more than $100 million in federal assistance over the next decade.

Mayor Chris Holden, who is leading the effort to submit an application to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for an empowerment zone designation, will head a community town meeting Sept. 9 to solicit input on the proposal.

City officials say if the city is chosen, the program could assist Pasadena’s poorest neighborhoods with jobs, educational programs, crime prevention and affordable housing. Nationwide, 15 urban areas will be chosen for the designation.
