Beating 25th-ranked Auburn was a lot easier than Virginia’s Aaron Brooks thought it would be.

Brooks threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Coffey in the second quarter and set up two field goals with passes in leading the No. 16 Cavaliers to a 19-0 victory over the Tigers Thursday night at Auburn, Ala.

“I thought they would bring all 11 guys on the line to confuse me, but they didn’t,” Brooks said. “I expected them to do something out of the ordinary.”

Brooks completed 16 of 28 passes for 220 yards while the Cavalier defense made it tough for new Auburn quarterback Ben Leard, who completed only 11 of 25 passes for 146 yards. The Tigers were held to 18 yards rushing.

Arizona 27, Hawaii 6--Chris McAlister returned the game’s opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Keith Smith passed for two touchdowns as the Wildcats won at Honolulu.

North Carolina State 34, Ohio 31--Roderick Brown blocked a punt with 1:59 left and Chris Coleman picked it up and ran 13 yards for a touchdown as the Wolfpack avoided an upset at Raleigh, N.C.

The Wolfpack, outplayed most of the way by the two-touchdown underdog Bobcats, overcame a 17-point, second-half deficit to win their season opener.
