An unidentified pilot died when his small experimental plane exploded in an open area near Boulder Canyon on Friday morning, a Federal Aviation Administration official said.

Los Angeles County firefighters said wreckage was strewn over a half-mile area and coroner’s officials said the body was not recognizable.

The identity of the victim had not been confirmed, authorities said.

The single-engine craft had taken off from Chino Municipal Airport at 7:10 a.m. It crashed on its way to Bakersfield Meadows Field Airport an hour later, said FAA spokesman Jerry Johnston.
