Hot Weather, Hot Classrooms
The lack of air-conditioners in the San Fernando Valley schools should be considered an occupational hazard for the teachers and a form of abuse for the students. (“Air-Conditioning Delays to Affect More Schools,” Aug. 21).
My daughter works at a school that lacks trees [and has] no air-conditioner. There are no shady spots, the bungalows lack cross-ventilation and the outdoor cement can cook eggs.
Just as schools are closed for floods, I believe they should also close for severe heat.
If there were air-conditioners as promised, the children and staff could continue education in comfort, rather than become debilitated or even sick from the heat.
As for learning, practically nothing can be done when the body and brain suffer in the heat.
Send the kids home or set up emergency plans for evening classes when the heat cools down.
