OUTLOOK

After a long 1997 season, Anaheim hopes to be competitive this year. The offense and defense have great quickness, but lack depth. Carter considers Ortiz to be his best player and has moved him from offensive tackle to tight end. Alcala is a quick, smart receiver who should be the go-to guy for Ramirez, another bright player who has a 3.5 grade-point average. Jiminez will be another primary receiver and Carter says he usually doesn’t drop anything in practice. Hicks is a very versatile player who will be used all over the field, and Pineda is as solid as a rock and loves to hit from the fullback and inside linebacker positions. Arredondo can bench press 350 pounds and is particularly strong on the defensive side of the ball. Cortez is a three-year starter at strong safety and Ibarra provides terrific one-on-one coverage at cornerback. Carter says Ucelo will run into a brick wall if you ask him to. Acosta came out late last season and should contribute on both sides of the ball, and Gonzales is a transfer from Arizona who should play some running back.
