A Newport Beach woman was robbed of $300 but unhurt early Tuesday when a man claiming to have a gun appeared in the back seat of her sport-utility vehicle, police said.

About 6:30 a.m., the 39-year-old woman withdrew money from the automated teller machine at the Bank of America, 1016 Irvine Ave., then got coffee at a nearby shop, Police Lt. Mike McDermott said.

She told investigators she was unsure if she locked the doors of her Lincoln Navigator at both stops, and a man rose up from behind the seat as she drove off, McDermott said.

He told her he had a gun, though she never saw it, and made her drive about 20 minutes before ordering her to return to the bank and withdraw her limit in cash, McDermott said. The man then ran off through Westcliff Plaza and escaped.

He was described as white, in his 30s, with dark hair, wearing a green hooded sweatshirt with yellow lettering on the back, and perhaps blue plaid shorts, McDermott said.
