Duesler Advances in National Tennis Event
Top-seeded Bob Duesler of Newport Beach defeated Peter Rigby of Wilmington, Del., 6-4, 6-1, in the third round of the USTA National Men’s 60 singles Grass Court Championship at Rockaway Hunting Club in Lawrence, N.Y.
Third-seeded Herman Ahlers of Dana Point beat fourth-seeded Nik Marenko of Kennesan, Ga., 6-4, 6-3. Fourth-seeded Len Lindborg of Laguna Beach advanced by beating ninth-seeded George Gill of Tinton Falls, N.J., 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 6-4.

USC women’s soccer player Kaylee Whitfield tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee and will miss her junior season. She was injured Friday in the last minute of the Trojans’ 2-0 loss to San Diego State.
Whitfield, an All-Orange County selection while at El Modena High, tore the ACL in her right knee during spring practice, but had managed to get ready for the season.

Irvine High’s Scott Hinman has been chosen as 1998 Section 7 girls’ swimming and diving coach of the year by the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Assn.
