Civil War Reenactors Do Battle on Weekend
Central Park will be transformed into a Civil War battlefield today and Sundayas hundreds of actors from throughout the state reenact the War Between the States.
About a dozen infantry and artillery units will portray their forebears in authentic reproductions of gray and blue wool uniforms. Women, children and other camp-followers will demonstrate the 19th century lifestyle.
The Huntington Beach Historical Society has been hosting the reenactments for about three years, drawing thousands of spectators, said Carl A. Clink, president of the society.
“It’s free and there is no alcohol and no surfing,” Clink said of its appeal.
The camp opens at 10 a.m. today at the park’s youth grounds at Golden West Street and Talbert Avenue. The first battle starts at 1 p.m. with another at 4 p.m. Actors will demonstrate the use of weapons throughout both days.
On Sunday, the shooting starts at 11 a.m., with a second battle at 2 p.m.
Visitors are welcome to stay into Saturday evening, as most of the actors will camp on the spot, Clink said.
Modern-day food, including hot dogs and soda, will be sold on the campgrounds.
