Grants Made to County Women’s Programs

The Ventura County Community Foundation announced the recipients of its Women’s Legacy Fund program. The grants support programs on family violence, child abuse, anger management and welfare-to-work transition.

The Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence received $7,973 to begin outreach and intervention in Port Hueneme for girls ages 12-18 who have been abused or molested.

El Centrito de La Colonia received $4,015 to develop a Latinas’ leadership group that assists young women in developing character and coping skills.

The Harrington Family Center received $7,500 to implement a Mentoring Moms and Daughters Project that links women and girls to a series of educational, social, medical and counseling services.

Interface Children Family Services received $6,612 to establish the SafeJourney-Mentoring for Battered Women in Transition Project.

The foundation established the fund in 1995 to build a permanent endowment focusing on the special needs of women and girls in Ventura County.

Area Student Cited in National Program

* Peter Hernandez, a senior at Santa Clara High School, has been recognized as an honorable mention finalist in the National Hispanic Recognition Program. The program, administered by the College Board, recognizes exceptional academic achievements by Latino high school seniors and identifies them for post-secondary institutions.

The 4,000 highest-scoring students, selected from more than 150,000 students nationwide, are named as semifinalists. Based on further evidence of academic achievement, 3,000 students are named program finalists.

Lawyer Honored for Vocational Excellence

* Carmen Ramirez was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Ventura South. Ramirez is a lawyer and executive director of the nonprofit Channel Counties Legal Services in Oxnard. The $1,000 award honors vocational excellence.
