The Sporting News

ON TV

Kansas City at Jacksonville

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* TV: Channel 2.

* Records: Chiefs 1-0; Jaguars 1-0.

* Story line: Quarterback Elvis Grbac (separated shoulder) will be on the sideline and Rich Gannon will get the nod for the Chiefs. Gannon is more mobile than Grbac, but isn’t as accomplished as a passer.

* The line: Jaguars by 4.

*

Tampa Bay at Green Bay

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* TV: Channel 11.

* Records: Buccaneers 0-1; Packers 1-0.

* Story line: The Buccaneers have no chance to get past the Vikings and knock the Packers off their NFC Central perch this year. OK, so we’re exaggerating, but it is important to see how the Buccaneers respond to their loss at Minnesota.

* The line: Packers by 7.

*

Dallas at Denver

* Kickoff: 1:15 p.m.

* TV: Channel 11.

* Records: Cowboys 1-0; Broncos 1-0.

* Story line: It was the running game that carried Dallas past Arizona in Week 1. Look for Denver to feature Terrell Davis in a big way. Despite scoring two touchdowns, Davis was a little off his game against the Patriots on Monday night, rushing for only 75 yards in 22 carries. Quarterback John Elway starred in the victory over New England, passing for 257 yards and no interceptions.

* The line: Broncos by 7 1/2.

*

Indianapolis at New England

* Kickoff: 5:20 p.m.

* TV: ESPN.

* Records: Colts 0-1; Patriots 0-1.

* Story line: Despite his three interceptions, quarterback Peyton Manning was impressive in his debut, a loss to Miami on Sunday. He’ll be tested by an aggressive, fast New England defense that loves to blitz. For Indianapolis to succeed, it will need more from star back Marshall Faulk and the interior offensive line, which was dominated by the Dolphins’ front four.

* The line: Patriots by 10 1/2.

THE REST

Minnesota at St. Louis

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* Records: Vikings 1-0; Rams 0-1.

* Story line: The Vikings demolished the Buccaneers, 31-7, but the biggest news for the Vikings offense was that quarterback Brad Johnson is sound. Look for Robert Holcombe and/or Greg Hill to be an integral part of the Ram offense.

* The line: Vikings by 8.

*

Philadelphia at Atlanta

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* Records: Eagles 0-1; Falcons 1-0.

* Story line: This could be a blowout. Eagle starting cornerbacks Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent will both sit out with injuries. That leaves three rookies to choose from.

* The line: Falcons by 8 1/2.

*

San Diego at Tennessee

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* Records: Chargers 1-0; Oilers 1-0.

* Story line: Although the Chargers won in Ryan Leaf’s debut, the rookie QB was less than impressive, throwing two interceptions. The Oilers got quarterback Steve McNair some receivers in the off-season, and expect to have a high-powered offense very soon.

* The line: Oilers by 7 1/2.

*

Baltimore at N.Y. Jets

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* Records: Ravens 0-1; Jets 0-1.

* Story line: Quarterback Glenn Foley threw for 415 yards and three touchdowns in an overtime loss to San Francisco. The receiver trio of Keyshawn Johnson, Wayne Chrebet and Dedric Ward was impressive, with Johnson hauling in nine passes and two touchdowns. The New York defense struggled against the 49ers and lost linebacker James Farrior to a sprained knee. Expect the Ravens to test the soft middle with short passes and to try to spring Errict Rhett.

* The line: Jets by 5 1/2.

*

Buffalo (0-1) at Miami

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* Records: Bills 0-1; Dolphins 1-0.

* Story line: The Dolphins will effectively shut down the Bills if they can disrupt any rhythm between quarterback Rob Johnson and Andre Reed. The Dolphins’ running attack, widely regarded as a huge liability, keyed the victory over the Colts’ soft front seven, with the talented but unpredictable Karim Abdul-Jabbar picking up 108 yards.

* The line: Dolphins by 7 1/2.

*

Carolina at New Orleans

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* Records: Panthers 0-1; Saints 1-0.

* Story line: The Panthers’ makeshift offensive line is hurting their already-shaky offense. Because of injuries, the team starts undrafted rookie Paul Janus at center. Saint quarterback Billy Joe Hobert is lost for the season with a torn Achilles’ tendon and second-year man Danny Wuerffel takes over.

* The line: Panthers by 4 1/2.

*

Chicago at Pittsburgh

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* Records: Bears 0-1; Steelers 1-0.

* Story line: Jerome Bettis’ struggles (23 carries, 41 yards against the Ravens) probably have a lot to do with the absence of injured fullback Tim Lester. The Bears still aren’t getting acceptable pressure from their defensive line, and can’t blitz because they still give receivers too much of a cushion on the corners. There are plenty of weaknesses for Steeler quarterback Kordell Stewart to exploit.

* The line: Steelers by 11 1/2.

*

Cincinnati at Detroit

* Kickoff: 10 a.m.

* Records: Bengals 0-1; Lions 0-1.

* Story line: You know what you’re getting with Barry Sanders, but what about fullback Tommy Vardell? With defenses keying on the co-MVP, Vardell could find himself open a lot coming out of the backfield to catch passes. Bengal tailback Corey Dillon is on his way to proving that his rookie season wasn’t a fluke.

* The line: Lions by 7.

*

Arizona at Seattle

* Kickoff: 1:15 p.m.

* Records: Cardinals 0-1; Seahawks 1-0.

* Story line: The Seahawks have been notoriously slow starters under Coach Dennis Erickson, but could be looking at 3-0 if they keep playing the way they did against the Eagles in Week 1. Cardinals need to get pressure on Warren Moon.

* The line: Seahawks by 8.

*

New York Giants at Oakland

* Kickoff: 1:15 p.m.

* Records: Giants 1-0; Raiders 0-1

* Story line: Like last season, the Giants won’t win without a running game that can chew up some time on the clock. The Raiders are in the middle of revamping their entire defense, and clearly aren’t there yet.

* The line: Raiders by 2.
