Garcia, Ruelas on Card in Atlantic City Fight

Robert Garcia of Oxnard and Gabriel Ruelas of Sylmar will fight in separate bouts on the same card Oct. 24 at Trump Taj Majal in Atlantic City.

Garcia, 30-0 with 23 knockouts, will defend his IBF junior-lightweight title against Ramon Ledon in a 12-round bout. Ruelas, 45-4 with 24 knockouts, will fight a 10-round bout against James Leija in a rematch of a 1994 world-title bout won by Ruelas.

VOLLEYBALL

Murphy dies: Debbie Murphy, a volleyball and basketball player who graduated from Burroughs High in 1988, died Tuesday from leukemia.

Murphy, known as Debbie Penney when she helped Burroughs win two league titles before earning All-Pacific 10 honors at Arizona State, was an assistant volleyball coach at Colorado State before being diagnosed with leukemia last year.

SOFTBALL

Bustos is best: Crystl Bustos of the Orlando Wahoos was selected most valuable player in the Women’s Professional Fastpitch League despite missing 17 days and playing the end of the season with a major knee injury.

The Canyon High graduate tore her anterior cruciate ligament on July 7 while sliding into third base. Bustos, who had knee surgery to replace the ligament last week after the Wahoos won the title, led the WPFL and set single-season records with a .400 batting average, a .447 on-base percentage and a .633 slugging percentage.

TRACK AND FIELD

New assistants: Glenn McAtee, Vanitta Kinard and Shelia Burrell have been hired as assistants to Cal State Northridge Coach Don Strametz.

SWIMMING

Speaker: Former Russian Olympic swimmer Vladmir Boure will speak to Conejo Simi Aquatics members at 5:30 tonight at Rancho Simi Community Park Pool in Simi Valley.
