With No Quarterback, Jets Are in Trouble

Share

Glenn Foley or Vinny Testaverde? Punt.

Jet Coach Bill Parcells is trying to win without a quarterback. Foley, who held off Testaverde in the preseason--and how hard can that be?--played well against the 49ers but took a dive against the Ravens and injured his rib cartilage.

“I don’t want to hurt the team,” said Foley, but his injury means Testaverde might start, and how painful might that be?

In the first two games Parcells listed Ray Lucas as the team’s No. 2 quarterback behind Foley.

While quarterback injuries are piling up, Peyton Manning’s ego is only bruised in Indianapolis. Manning’s seven turnovers in two games have led to 34 points for the opposition. Said the rookie: “Sometimes you watch the film and say, ‘That doesn’t look like me out there.’ ” The Colts aren’t happy with Manning but have nowhere to turn with Kelly Holcomb standing behind him. “I’m convinced he’s our best quarterback, so, like any position, we’re going to play our best player,” Coach Jim Mora said.

Buffalo quarterback Rob Johnson has struggled to entrench himself as the team’s starter, and so Coach Wade Phillips will simplify the offense. That’s usually the last stop before making a change, in this case to Doug Flutie.
