A school bus carrying 52 children to De Anza Middle School in Ventura was rear-ended by a trash truck Friday morning in Oak View, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 8:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of California 33 at Creek Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Three girls were taken by ambulance to Ojai Valley Community Hospital, Ventura County Fire Capt. Ken Cochran said. One complained of neck pain and two were shaken and upset, Cochran said. All three were released Friday afternoon.

A second bus arrived about 30 minutes after the crash and transported the remaining students, all sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, to their campus at 2060 Cameron St.

“They were very good and very well-behaved,” Cochran said of the students.

The bus radiator was broken and its back end was damaged, Cochran said. The cause of the crash was not known.

The incident caused a lengthy traffic backup in the southbound lanes, which cleared about 9 a.m.
