Baylor’s Block Stops N.C. State Rally Short

After opening the season with two amazing victories, North Carolina State nearly pulled off another Saturday. But this time, the Wolfpack fell just short.

Baylor’s James Calvin blocked Kent Passingham’s 39-yard field-goal attempt with four seconds left and the Bears (1-1) held on for a 33-30 nonconference victory over the 20th-ranked Wolfpack (2-1) at Waco, Texas.

“I thought we’d score a TD late and win the game,” said N.C. State Coach Mike O’Cain, whose team overcame a 17-point deficit in its opener to beat Ohio University, 34-31, and shocked then-No. 2 Florida State, 24-7, last Saturday.

N.C. State quarterback Jamie Barnette passed for 469 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target was Torry Holt, who caught 11 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns.

No. 5 Kansas State 48, Texas 7--David Allen’s zig-zagging, 93-yard punt return keyed a 28-point second quarter and the Wildcats (3-0, 1-0 Big 12) held Ricky Williams to 43 yards in a rout of the Longhorns (1-2, 0-1) at Manhattan, Kan.

Darnell McDonald caught 11 passes from Michael Bishop for 159 yards and two touchdowns as Kansas State won its 11th in a row and handed the Longhorns their most lopsided defeat since last year’s 66-3 loss to UCLA.

No. 15 Colorado 25, Utah State 6--Mike Moschetti was sacked eight times but threw two touchdown passes to Darrin Chiaverini, and Ben Kelly returned a punt 68 yards for another score, sparking the Buffaloes (3-0) to a nonconference victory over the Aggies (0-3) at Boulder, Colo.

No. 17 Texas A&M; 24, Southern Mississippi 6--Dante Hall, who didn’t start and was limited by back spasms, scored two touchdowns to lead the Aggies (2-1) to a nonconference victory at Hattiesburg, Miss. as the Golden Eagles dropped to 0-2 for the first time since 1976.

Oklahoma State 42, No. 25 Mississippi State 23--Tony Lindsay ran for two touchdowns and threw for 201 yards for the Cowboys (2-1) in a nonconference game at Stillwater, Okla.

The Bulldogs (2-1) gave up 561 yards on defense.

Kansas 63, Illinois State 21--Mitch Bowles and Dustin Curry each ran for 94 yards and two touchdowns, and Julius Bruce scored the first two touchdowns of his career for the Jayhawks (1-2) in a nonconference game against Division I-AA Illinois State (1-1) at Lawrence, Kan.

Texas Tech 34, Fresno State 28--Ricky Williams rushed for 244 yards and two touchdowns but the Red Raiders (3-0) needed a defensive touchdown in the final minute to hold off the Bulldogs (0-2) in a nonconference game at Lubbock, Texas.

Iowa State 38, Ball State 0--Darren Davis ran for 200 yards and scored three touchdowns and the Cyclones (2-1) got their first shutout in 14 years in a rout of the Cardinals (0-3) at Ames, Iowa.
