Ex-Champion Canizales to Fight in Reseda

Orlando Canizales, former world bantamweight champion, and former NFL running back turned heavyweight boxer Alonzo Highsmith will headline an intriguing boxing program Oct. 22 at the Reseda Country Club.

Highsmith, who played at the University of Miami and for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Oilers, is 27-0 with 23 knockouts. He will fight Carl Chancellor of Odessa, Texas, who is 7 feet 2 and 425 pounds. Also scheduled in separate bouts are lightweights Eddie Contreras of Santa Paula and Effi Schneider of Los Angeles, and heavyweight Victor Ortiz of Simi Valley.

A women’s bout also is scheduled.

BASEBALL

Scanlan victory: Former Harvard-Westlake pitcher Bob Scanlan allowed five hits in eight innings and earned the victory to lead Houston Astro triple-A affiliate New Orleans in a 3-2 victory Thursday over Buffalo in the Minor League World Series at Las Vegas.

Former Channel Islands player Jacob Cruz scored for Buffalo, an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, which trails, 2-1, in the series.

BASKETBALL

Floor show: The Cal Lutheran three-on-three tournament is scheduled for Oct. 3 beginning at 9 a.m.

The tournament, directed by men’s basketball Coach Rich Rider of Cal Lutheran, is for boys and girls in the fourth through eighth grades. Information: (805) 493-3404.

FOOTBALL

Memorable: The annual Country Days parade in Moorpark will have an unusual grand marshal on Saturday--the 1997 Moorpark High football team, which won the Southern Section Division X championship.

“The Country Days theme is ‘Memories,’ and I guess our championship was a pretty good one,” Coach Ron Wilford said.

The parade down historic High Street begins at 9:30 a.m.

ROAD RACING

Family day: The third annual Ventura County 8K Championship Race and 2K Family Run/Walk is scheduled for Sunday beginning at Moorpark High.

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. The entry fee is $12 for the 8K race and $7 for the 2K event. Proceeds benefit Ventura County high school cross-country and track and field programs.
