Bousquet Races to Record as Esperanza Beats Marina

Esperanza’s Ryan Bousquet set a course record in the Aztecs’ 15-50 victory over Marina Thursday in a Sunset League boys’ cross-country meet.

Bousquet, a junior, covered the three-mile course at Huntington Beach’s Central Park in 14 minutes 48 seconds.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 23, Villa Park 33--Augie Escobar’s 15:22 was enough to lead the pack, but Villa Park (0-1) came up short at Centennial Park. Victor Lopez finished the three-mile race in 15:40 to lead Santa Ana Valley (1-0).

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 25, Irvine 32--Matt Farrell finished first for Irvine (16:14) on the three-mile course at O’Neill Park. Chris Wilcox was El Toro’s top runner, finishing second in 16:30.

Santa Margarita 24, Corona del Mar 31--Sophomore Steven Murray of Santa Margarita finished first in 16 minutes 18 seconds on the three-mile course for Santa Margarita (3-0, 1-0).

In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:

Corona del Mar 29, Santa Margarita 30--Despite the Eagles’ one-two finish, Corona del Mar, ranked first in Division IV, was able to win. Jennifer Cummins was third for Corona del Mar. Lori Mann won the three-mile race in 18:41 and Meghan Mainwaring finished 19 seconds behind her for second.

El Toro 27, Irvine 28--Becky Miske helped El Toro edge Irvine with a first-place finish (19:15) on O’Neill Park’s three-mile course.

Woodbridge 25, Newport Harbor 36--Newport Harbor’s Alicia McFall finished first (18:37) and teammate Jessica Kanin was second (18:49) on the three-mile course at Woodbridge. Woodbridge runners finished third through ninth.

In nonleague girls’ cross-country:

Western 27, La Habra 28--Jodie Unsworth’s three-mile time of 20:35 led the way for host Western (1-0). Cassandra Chavez topped La Habra (0-1), going 20:55.

In nonleague girls’ golf:

Edison 106, University 107--Angela Won of University shot a one-over par 32, at David L. Baker golf course. Lauren Brown led Edison with a two-over 33.

Marina 142, Ocean View 147--Courtney Goebel had a birdie on hole No. 7, a 155-yard, par 3, en route to a four-over 40 for Marina (4-1) at Meadowlark.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 15, No. 9 Villa Park 3--Courtney Tenerelli and Ruchika Budhraja won in doubles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for host Corona del Mar (3-1). Villa Park is 1-3.

El Dorado 9, Esperanza 9 (El Dorado wins on games, 78-70)--Tracy Le and Tracy Kiger won key doubles sets, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 for host El Dorado (6-2). Kelly Six improved to 24-0 on the season, sweeping in singles, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 for Esperanza (7-1).

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Ocean View 3, Corona del Mar 2--The teams, ranked first and second in Division III-A teams, split the first four games. Top-ranked Ocean View (3-1) won the first two, 15-4, 15-9. Corona del Mar won the next two, 12-15,, 8-15 but dropped the fifth game, 15-5. Jessica Bradosky had 21 kills and teammates Carissa Gouth and Andrea Droeger both had 20 and Tracy Lindquist added 15 kills and 63 assists and 28 digs for Ocean View. Demetra Havriluk had 25 kills for Corona del Mar (2-3).

In the South Coast water polo tournament:

Villa Park 10, University 9 (OT)--Villa Park’s Nick Pacelli scored 15 seconds into sudden-death overtime. Pacelli had five goals for the Spartans (6-2) in the second-round game. In a first-round game, the Spartans beat Tustin, 18-2. as Pacelli scored seven goals.
