Funeral Services Planned Tuesday for Kokon

Funeral services for Pete Kokon will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Oakwood Memorial Park (22601 Lassen St.) in Chatsworth. Visitation will be conducted Monday from 4-8 p.m. at Praiswater Meyer-Mitchell Mortuary (5940 Van Nuys Blvd.) in Van Nuys.

Kokon, who covered high school sports in the San Fernando Valley for more than 60 years, died Thursday at the age of 85.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pacific Lodge Boys Home (4900 Serrania Avenue, Woodland Hills, 91364) or to the McKinley Children’s Center (762 West Cypress, San Dimas, 91773).

GOLF

Greg Norman, sidelined since April after shoulder surgery, will make his return to PGA Tour competition Nov. 11-15 during the Shark Shootout at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

Norman, host of the tournament since its inception 10 years ago, will team with Steve Elkington.

Also confirmed to join the 24-player field are defending champions Bruce Lietzke and Scott McCarron as well as Fred Couples, Justin Leonard, John Daly, Fuzzy Zoeller, Davis Love III, Brad Faxon, Jim Furyk, Mark Calcavecchia, John Cook, Ben Crenshaw, Scott Hoch, Craig Stadler and Tom Kite.

The seven players who will complete the field of 12 two-man teams are expected to be confirmed soon.

Jeff Coburn of Ojai, who won five Ventura County junior golf tournaments this year, has been selected the Ventura County Junior Golf Assn. player of the year.

The 1998 Nordhoff High graduate and UC Irvine freshman will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the VCJGA.

Coburn, the 1998 county scoring leader among juniors, won the Ventura County Junior Championship, Fillmore City Championship, Ventura City Junior Championship and junior championships at Spanish Hills Country Club and Sunset Hills Country Club.

ADVENTURE RACING

The next Hi-Tec Adventure Racing Series National Championships are Oct. 24 at Castaic Lake Recreation Area.

The competition features three-person teams running a five- to eight-mile trail, kayaking and mountain biking.

Registration is underway for the fourth annual Cycle to End the Cycle Twin Peaks Charity Mountain Bike Ride beginning and ending at Dunn School in Los Olivos, just north of Ojai, on Oct. 10.

Proceeds will benefit the Santa Ynez Valley People Helping People’s Advocates for Domestic and Child Abuse Prevention.

Jim Enstrom and Hadi Morshed of Los Angeles defeated Rick Van Name and Gary Cruz of Westlake Village, 7-5, 7-6, to capture the United States Tennis Assn. Senior Tennis Championship Grand Prix men’s 45 doubles title Friday at Westlake Tennis & Swim Club.

Perry Saliano of Agoura and Gene Malin of Woodland Hills advanced to the finals in men’s 35 doubles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mitch Tatro and Steve Wright, both of Woodland Hills.

Saliano and Malin will face Louis Baker of Sherman Oaks and Louis Cadiz at 4 p.m. Sunday.
