Andrew Newchurch rushed for 162 yards in 19 carries, including a 54-yard touchdown on a fake punt, to lead Monroe High to a 27-21 nonconference victory over Cleveland Friday night at Cleveland.

Monroe’s double-wing offense rolled for 443 yards without star running back DeAndre Philips, who left the game with a sprained left ankle with 3:19 remaining in the first quarter.

Trailing throughout, Cleveland (1-2) rallied behind quarterback Eddie Whitaker, who completed 10 of 23 passes for 304 yards and three touchdown passes--all to wide receiver Andre McIntosh, who had four catches for 229 yards. Whitaker was intercepted once. Andre Peeples rushed for 104 yards in nine carries, including a 65-yard touchdown, for Monroe (2-1).
