In the early 1900s, bell maker and historian A.S.C. Forbes placed 450 mission bells along a historic route linking 21 California missions. Over the years, many of the bells vanished from the route, which was named El Camino Real, or “The King’s Highway.” But the Fountain Valley Woman’s Club has picked up Forbes’ tradition and placed a mission bell at John Wayne Airport last week. “This is a neat location to share this history,” said Julie Hoxsie, project chairwoman. “You have people going in and out of the airport all of the time who’ll get a chance to see something marking California’s past.”
