WNBA’s Sparks Could Lose Zheng
The Los Angeles Sparks are expected to place 6-foot-8 Chinese center Haixia Zheng in today’s WNBA expansion draft.
Zheng, 32, was an invaluable scorer and rebounder inside when the Sparks were slowed into a half-court offense in the club’s first two seasons. But her arthritic knees made her a liability.
The existing 10 WNBA teams can protect six players in the draft, held for new teams Orlando and Minnesota. It’s expected the Sparks will protect Lisa Leslie, Penny Toler, Allison Feaster, Mwadi Mabika, Jamila Wideman and Tamecka Dixon.
If so, Zheng, Katrina Colleton, Pam McGee, Eugenia Rycraw, Rehema Stephens and Sandra VanEmbricqs will be unprotected.
The season is scheduled to begin June 10.
