Millikan Defeats El Toro for Big West Title

Long Beach Millikan built a four-run lead after three innings and went on to defeat El Toro, 5-2, in the championship game of the Big West Invitational Thursday at Windrow Park. The game was stopped after five innings because of rain.

Millikan (13-2) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after El Toro pitcher Bobby Pearce walked two batters and they eventually scored. Another run scored following a hit batsmen in the second inning, and Millikan got an unearned run in the third.

Eric Walsh, who homered in El Toro’s 10-0 semifinal victory over Los Alamitos earlier Thursday, homered in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-1. In other tournament games:

Huntington Beach 10, Capistrano Valley 4--Ryan Brumcrot of Huntington Beach hit a grand slam in the fifth inning of the fifth-place game. Brumcrot was three for four with five RBIs and two runs scored for the Oilers (7-6).

Irvine 2, Foothill 1--Felix Angel pitched a one-hitter with seven strikeouts for Irvine. Chad Hazlett scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball.

Woodbridge 4, Foothill 1--Zack Foster went one for three with 3 RBIs to lead Woodbridge (6-8). Mike Castillo (2-1) took the loss for Foothill (6-5, 4-1).

In the West Coast Classic:

Calvary Chapel 9, Fresno Bullard 7--Seniors Matt Mossberg and Chad Sterbens both went two for four with two RBIs to lead the Eagles in the semifinal victory at San Jose College.

Third baseman Matt Wilber also had two hits for Calvary Chapel (12-1), which will face Riverside Arlington in the championship game today. In the Empire League:

Cypress 6, Kennedy 5--Paul Kerr scored the game-winner on Rob Crosta’s bases-loaded single in the seventh. Katella 5, Loara 4--Carlos Pasillas tied the score with an RBI double in the seventh and after an intentional walk to load the bases, Chris Walters won the game with a two-out single.

Mike Martinez (5-0) threw a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Knights (9-4, 5-1).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 4, Troy 0--Ryan Huff went two for three with two RBIs for La Habra 10-2, 5-1. He also pitched a three-hit shutout.

Sunny Hills 11, Fullerton 1 (5 Mercy)--Nathan Hochgesang, David Coughlin, Jared Bruce and Mike Bills all hit two-run home runs for Sunny Hills.

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 6, Anaheim 5--Shortstop Joey Gutierrez had three hits for Magnolia (6-5, 4-2). Savanna 4, Western 2--Jason Meadows hit a three-run homer in the third and Ryan Seltzer also homered for the Rebels (5-6, 3-3).
