From Times Wire Reports

A forest fire in the Appalachian foothills kept dozens of residents out of their homes as firefighters battled the flames. The fire had charred about 400 acres of forest, mostly on private land, in the area 60 miles west of Winston-Salem. More than 50 homes were evacuated. Residents were allowed to return Saturday night. Firefighters continued battling the fire into the night, and officials said they hoped to have the blaze contained by today. No injuries have been reported and no homes were damaged, officials said.
