Leaders Hit the Books for Read Aloud Day

Every day, City Councilman Murray Rosenbluth works his way through a stack of dry, technical political files as part of his job.

Its no wonder then that Rosenbluth, who shares the city’s citizen of the year honors with his wife, Adele, jumps at the chance to read something more fun.

He will read “Just Another Ordinary Day” by Rod Clement at the Ray D. Prueter Library at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday as part of “Day of a Thousand Stars: The Great American Read Aloud,” sponsored by the American Library Assn.

The event is being held in conjunction with National Library Week, which runs through Saturday.

Rosenbluth, vice chairman of the Ventura County Library Commission and a member of the advisory team for the Prueter Library, said some of his earliest memories are of visiting libraries and choosing books.

Rosenbluth is currently reading Stephen Coont’s “Fortunes of War,” about a hypothetical war between Japan and Russia.

It’s a shoot-em-up that appeals to a guy, Rosenbluth said with a chuckle.

“Just Another Ordinary Day” is a bit milder.

The main character is a third-grader named Amanda, who takes the reader through a typical day of school and home life.

Children will be able to identify with Amanda, Rosenbluth said.

Other guest readers include Port Hueneme Police Cmdr. Fernando Estrella at 10:45 a.m. and television actor Justin Berfield, who stars on “Unhappily Ever After,” to read “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss at 11 a.m.
