Top San Luis Rey Finishers in Rematch
Single Empire and Kessem Power, separated by a nose in the San Luis Rey Stakes on March 21, head the 10-horse field for Sunday’s $400,000 San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita.
The San Juan Capistrano, at a distance of almost 1 3/4 miles, will be run on the second-last day of the 84-day Santa Anita meet.
Kessem Power was third in last year’s San Juan Capistrano. Others running Sunday are Lazy Lode, Dushyantor, Le Paillard, Montjoy, Rate Cut, Fibonacci, Percutant and Lucayan Indian.
Horse Racing Notes
Running less than two weeks before the Kentucky Derby is no longer considered the best way to get ready for that race, but a few Derby contenders may emerge Sunday from the 14-horse field in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland. Among the runners are Lucky Roberto, Epic Honor, Walk That Walk, Charismatic, Finder’s Gold, Yankee Victor, Doneraile Court, Grits’n Hard Toast and Lethal Instrument. . . . Real Quiet will become the first Kentucky Derby winner to run in Texas Sunday in the Texas Mile at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie. . . . Some of the jockeys with choices have decided on their Derby mounts: Jerry Bailey on Worldly Manner, Chris McCarron on Stephen Got Even, John Velazquez on Three Ring, Eddie Delahoussaye on First American and Alex Solis on K One King.
