A 26-year-old Fountain Valley man died Saturday in Huntington Beach after losing control of his motorcycle, police said.

The man, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, was traveling south on Newland Street near Slater Avenue on his 1998 Yamaha when the accident occurred, said Huntington Beach Police Lt. Luis Ochoa.

Witnesses told investigators that the rider was speeding when the front wheel of his bike became airborne, Ochoa said.

When the front wheel returned to the pavement, the driver lost control and collided with a street sign, then hit a light pole.

The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics after suffering massive trauma, Ochoa said.
