Re “Suit Against Newhall Ranch OKd,” April 7.

It is good to know that there are clear-headed people worried about Newhall Land & Farming’s latest proposed fiasco. The L.A. County Supervisors approved a huge 21,000-unit development in our area because their reelection campaigns count heavily on developers, particularly Newhall Land. Nevermind the shortage of water, schools, roads and general negative impact this project will have on the environment. Newhall Land & Farming never worries about those things. It is personally hoped Ventura County wins this lawsuit and stops the proposed development. They have almost as much at stake as we do!

On one hand [Ventura County] is protesting, via a potential lawsuit, the development of Newhall Ranch on the border between Ventura County and Los Angeles County, while with the other hand they are promoting the development of the Ahmanson Ranch property, likewise bordering both counties.

In the Newhall Ranch case, they are arguing that the new development will deplete ground water availability for Ventura’s citrus groves and increase air pollution but they have no concern that their Ahmanson Ranch development will increase water usage and add to L.A. County’s air pollution by greatly increased traffic; all this while taking full advantage of all the tax revenues created by the new development.
