HUNTINGTON PARK — City police wounded an unarmed man who apparently fled from officers at a street fair and then reached into the waistband of his pants, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 10:40 p.m. Sunday near Clarendon and Rugby avenues. Police said Monday that they had stopped the man in response to a citizen’s report about a man carrying a gun. The suspect ran from police, according to Deputy Cruz Solis, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department, which is helping Huntington Park with the case.
During the chase, Solis said, the suspect reached for his waistband and was shot three times in the upper body by police. Although guns can be carried in waistbands, officers did not find a weapon on the suspect, Solis said.
The Sheriff’s Department declined Monday to release details of the incident, including the names of the wounded man and the officer involved in the shooting. Solis said paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he was in serious condition.
