Basketball Standouts Set for Double Pump Classic

Arizona recruit Gilbert Arenas of Grant High, New Mexico-bound Rafael Berumen of Simi Valley and UC Santa Barbara recruits B.J. Ward and Nick Jones of Santa Clara have committed to play in the Double Pump All-Star Basketball Classic at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The boys’ game will follow a 5 p.m. girls’ game that will include UCLA-bound Jaline Bradley of Channel Islands.

* Brian Haloossiam, boys’ basketball coach at Campbell Hall, will conduct a camp for boys and girls in grades one through eight June 21-25, July 12-16 and Aug. 2-6 at the North Hollywood campus. The sessions will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

GYMNASTICS
* Erica Rubin of Chatsworth and Trishna Patel of Northridge have advanced to national competition in May with their performances in a recent regional meet.
Rubin, 15, was a gold medalist in the floor exercise and won a bronze medal in the vault at the Region I USA Gymnastics Championships last weekend in Salt Lake City.
She earned a place on the 1999 Region I Junior Olympic team and will compete in the Junior Olympics on May 14-16 in Austin, Texas.
Patel, 16, won a gold medal on the vault and will compete at the USA Gymnastics western national championships on May 7-8 in Seattle.

SOFTBALL
* Kelly Lovato of Cal State Sacramento was selected Big West Conference pitcher of the week for the third time this season.
Lovato (13-8), who played at Royal High and Moorpark College, was 2-1 with a 1.71 earned-run average last week, posting shutout victories over St. Mary’s and New Mexico State.
* Freshman outfielder-pitcher Sarah Koppel of Harvard was selected Ivy League rookie of the week.
Koppel, from Westlake High, went 13 for 27 with eight runs batted in last week. The right-hander recorded two pitching victories, allowing 11 hits and one earned run in eight innings.
MISCELLANY
* The 10th annual Senior Sports Festival for participants 50 and up is scheduled for May 3-8 at various sites in Glendale.

* Keith Williams of Littlerock High, who rushed for 934 yards and seven touchdowns last season, has transferred to Long Beach Poly.
