Three teenagers were arrested on suspicion of setting off a pipe bomb early Wednesday in La Plata Park, the Sheriff’s Department said. The homemade bomb--made with gunpowder and a 7 1/2-inch-long metal pipe--exploded in a garbage container at 12:30 a.m., said Sheriff’s Lt. Hector Rivera. Neighbors heard the bomb go off and were able to catch the three juveniles, ages 13, 14 and 15, and hold them until deputies arrived.
Although the source of the gunpowder was still under investigation, other components of the bomb are available over the counter and had apparently come from one child’s home, authorities said. The Sheriff’s Department will file felony charges against the teens, Rivera said.
