Persistent rain cut short the schedule at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament on Friday, but not before Stanford and Arizona State each placed two men in the Pacific-10 Conference singles semifinals.

The steady climb of Stanford’s Ryan Wolters and Geoff Abrams is not a surprise. Wolters is ranked No. 4 in the nation, Abrams is No. 40 and they have a combined record of 58-16 this season.

But Jeff Williams, a senior transfer from New Mexico, and Gustavo Marcaccio, a 5-foot-8, soft-hitting senior from Argentina, barely kept their heads above water during Pac-10 dual matches, each going 7-5.

“This is such a great tournament, when you do have two guys in the semis, you’re proud of that,” Sun Devil Coach Lou Belken said.

Top-seeded Marissa Irvin of Stanford moved into the semifinals in singles and doubles by winning an early-morning match against Allison Bradshaw of Arizona State and a pair of doubles matches with partner Teryn Ashley after the rain delays.

In women’s singles semifinals today, Irvin faces Amy Jensen of Cal and Ashley will play Ditta Huber of USC.
