Highlight Reel: Detroit has a five-on-three advantage, courtesy of lunacy by Stu Grimson, who picks a brutal time for brutality on the Red Wings’ Chris Draper and is dismissed for the afternoon because of it. But nothing is happening from the Detroit power-play unit until Coach Scotty Bowman calls time out. Next thing you know, a play calls for Steve Yzerman to take a pass from Nicklas Lidstrom, work a bit of magic on the right side of Hebert, then show some resiliency in pounding the rebound past him for a 3-2 lead.

It’s Not in the Summary: At 14:21, there’s a stoppage and it’s time for the players to head to their benches. Chris Chelios and the Ducks’ Kevin Haller skate side by side, trading pushes, sticks, words, each trying to get the last one on this frozen playground. These are two marvelously talented teams that are starting to let macho get in the way of hockey.

Winning Number: Order is restored when Detroit outshoots the Ducks, 11-6, in the period, with an increasing number of shots coming from where the Red Wings score their goals: in Hebert’s face. One of them, by Tomas Holmstrom, is fungoed past Hebert and, after video judge Tom Wardell reviews things, it’s counted.

Wrong Number: The shot from the right wing is a beauty by Karya, and it sails past Osgood and the red light goes on just short of eight minutes before intermission. And the teams play on. It takes a TV stoppage before you learn the puck hit off the goal post and went along the goal line, inches from scoring, and the red light might have been on, but nobody was at home.
