University 9, Aliso Niguel 5--Cody Whitson hit a three-run home run in the first and went three for three for visiting University (10-10, 8-1-1). Jordan Cumsky also went three for three, including two doubles, for the Trojans. Aliso Niguel dropped to 12-8, 7-3.
In the Century League:
Foothill 17, No. 9 Canyon 4 (5, mercy)--Foothill (9-9, 7-3) defeated Canyon (16-5, 8-2) in five innings with the help of Omar Katz’s grand slam in the first inning. Brian Hayter went four for four, with two-run home run, two doubles and five RBIs for the Knights.
Santa Ana Valley 7 Orange 2--Sophomore shortstop Cesar DeLaRiva went three for three with two doubles and four RBIs and a stolen base for Santa Ana Valley (8-13, 4-6).
In the Orange League:
Brea Olinda 10, Valencia 6--The Wildcats defeated first-place Valencia (12-7-1, 7-2) for the second time in two games. Nick Stagnero had two doubles and Mark Becher had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs for Brea Olinda (9-9, 4-5).
In Orange League golf:
Valencia 210, Savanna 215--Jimmy Ginter shot a three-over 40, and was medalist for host Valencia (8-8, 4-3), at the Alta Vista Country Club.
In the Pacific Coast League golf finals:
Won wins fourth straight title--University senior Ron Won had seven birdies in his round of four-under 68, which earned him his fourth consecutive individual league title. Teammate Brian Sinay finished second after shooting 71 at El Dorado. University’s Ryan Miller finished third with a two-day total of two-over 146.
In the Sea View League:
El Toro 196, Newport Harbor 204--El Toro’s Donald Rhee and Satoru Suzuki shot two-under 34 to medal.
In Century League softball:
No. 1 Foothill 1, Orange 0 (8)--Foothill, ranked No. 3 in the state, needed eight innings to defeat Orange, 1-0, in a Century League game.
The Knights finally pushed a run across against losing pitcher Wendy Kralich as Amber Dragomir doubled and Courtney Fossatti singled, the ninth allowed by Kralich.
Fossatti (13-1) gave up only one hit in eight innings, and struck out 13 as Foothill improved to 22-3, 5-0. Orange is 8-10, 2-3.
In the Empire League:
Kennedy 7, Cypress 0--Senior Crystal Eubanks pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts for Kennedy (13-7, 5-0). Eubanks also went three for four and scored two runs.
In the Freeway League:
La Habra 2, No. 8 Sonora 1--Erin Murray hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh--only the second hit off losing pitcher Carrie Wisen (6-3)--to lift host La Habra.
Cassie Preece (3-6) struck out five, giving up four hits, to get the victory for La Habra (10-12, 3-2). Sonora fell to 17-6, 3-2.
Buena Park 3, Fullerton 0--Stephanie Beltran (8-4) drove in the first run of the game with a single, and pitched a shutout for host Buena Park (8-5, 2-3).
Troy 3, Sunny Hills 0--Junior Lindsey Knoff pitched a one-hitter to pick up her 15th win for Troy (15-7, 3-2). Sophomore shortstop Lisa Jackson went two for three with a double and two RBIs for the Warriors.
In the Garden Grove League:
Los Amigos 4, Santiago 0--Kristen Orem (11-5) pitched a shutout and went two for three for host Los Amigos (12-7, 5-3). Irene Peralta was one for two with a sacrifice fly and two RBIs for the Lobos.
In the Orange League:
Valencia 5, Magnolia 2--Annie Dedic went four for four with two runs scored and two RBIs for visiting Valencia (14-11, 4-1).
In the Pacific Coast League:
No. 10 Laguna Hills 5, Estancia 0--Melissa Creeger (16-2) pitched a no-hitter, striking out five, for visiting Laguna Hills (17-4-2, 5-0). Leslie Simien also contributed for the Hawks, going three for four with three stolen bases, and scoring two runs.
In the Sunset League:
No. 2 Fountain Valley 3, Esperanza 0--Christine Skaggs’ three-run home run in the fifth inning won the game for the Barons, who lead the league with a 17-6, 5-0 record.
In Sunset League boys’ swimming:
Los Alamitos 94, No. 8 Marina 92--With the meet tied at 86-86, Los Alamitos beat Marina’s 400 freestyle relay team by .01 seconds to secure the victory.
In South Coast League girls’ swimming:
No. 9 San Clemente 92, Capistrano Valley 76--Freshman Kristin Caverly finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.31 seconds) and 100 freestyle (54.16) for San Clemente (3-2 in league).
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 103, Fountain Valley 67--The Aztecs proved they were for real as Esperanza swept all three relays. Freshman Erin Sieper won the breaststroke in 1:06.73 and the 200 individual medley (2:12.55).
In Century League boys’ tennis:
El Modena 13, Orange 5--El Modena’s No. 3 doubles team of brothers Brent and Garett Omeste swept their match making it their sixth straight win.
In the Sea View League:
No. 1 Corona del Mar 17, Irvine 1--Corona del Mar’s No. 1 singles player sophomore Brian Morton swept his match surrendering only one game to remain undefeated this season 42-0.
