Re Las Vegas, “entertainment superstore” (“Give My Regards to . . . Vegas?,” July 18):

“Chicago” in Las Vegas at the Mandalay is grossing $600,000 a week with tickets from $55 to $85, yet they have an orchestra of five live musicians. “Chicago” on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre grossed $583,810 during the week ending July 18, with tickets from $30 to $80, and they’ve hired 24 musicians.

For the record:

‘Chicago’ stats--A letter last Sunday contained erroneous information about the New York and Las Vegas productions of “Chicago,” according to the musical’s producers. The Las Vegas production has 15 musicians, including the conductor, in the orchestra, with tickets priced from $55 to $80. The Broadway production uses 14 musicians, including the conductor; tickets are $20 to $80.

Thus Las Vegas is indeed a “superstore,” albeit one with overpriced imitations. Some audience members may wonder when greed will give way to a few more shreds of artistic integrity and Las Vegas will again use more live musicians than tape players in its showrooms.
