Kung, Rho Win Twice in U.S. Girls’ Championship

Fountain Valley’s Candie Kung, the top-seeded player in the field, and Fullerton’s Angela Rho advanced to the third round of match play Wednesday at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur championship in Owings Mills, Md.

Kung beat Miranda Smith of Hideaway Hills, Ohio, 4 and 3, then ousted Kelly Robb of Concord, Mass., 7 and 5. In the lower bracket, Rho beat Kristi Larsen of Scottsdale, Ariz., 4 and 3, and Erica Blasberg of Corona, 1 up.

* Yorba Linda’s Nico Bollini is tied for fourth at four-under 138, seven strokes back, entering the third round of an AJGA tournament in Plano, Texas.

Bollini shot 69 in the first two rounds. Ron Won of Irvine is a stroke behind Bollini at 139. Ty Tryon of Orlando leads by three shots with 36 holes to play.

* Irvine’s Steve Conway is tied for first entering today’s final round of the AJGA Southwestern Junior tournament at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Conway, who started the day in a four-way tie for the lead, pulled away from the pack, along with Jimmy Cunningham of Walkersville, Md. Both players had six birdies in their round. Conway was five-under par on the last 10 holes, shooting 71-69--140 on the par-72 course.

David Hawkins of Rancho Santa Margarita is tied for seventh at 145.

BOXING

Naoya Hirahara and Isreal Correa will fight tonight at the Irvine Marriott for the vacant state lightweight title.

Oxnard’s Correa (7-2) defeated Hirahara (11-3) of Fukuoka, Japan, in April on a majority 10-round decision. The featured undercard bout will be between Mark Tullius of Long Beach and Koki Nagasu of Tokyo. Both heavyweights will be making their professional debut.

Tickets are $25 and $35. The undercard begins at 7:30.

HIRINGS

Dave McDonald has been hired as men’s volleyball coach and Ron Galey as men’s and women’s tennis coach at Hope International. Galey coached at Concordia University and Trabuco Hills High. McDonald is a Pacific Christian graduate.

VOLLEYBALL

Becky Warnick, a senior at Capistrano Valley, has made an early commitment to Brigham Young University to play volleyball. Warnick was the MVP of the South Coast League last year and was the kill leader for the Laguna Beach Mizuno 18 team at the Davis Festival.
