“Teaching Mrs. Tingle,” which marks the directorial debut of “Scream,” “Scream 2” and “Dawson’s Creek” writer Kevin Williamson, stars Katie Holmes as a model student who runs afoul of an ill-tempered history teacher (Helen Mirren, above). It opens Friday in general release.

Art

Sculpture in two-dimensions--in the form of prints and drawings--is the subject of “Sculptors on Paper” opening Tuesday at the Cal State Long Beach University Museum, featuring works by Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, Louise Nevelson, Claes Oldenberg, Richard Serra and others, many on loan from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Armerican Art.

Dance

Hot from winning a Lester Horton Dance Award for sustained achievement, Lula Washington brings her locally based Dance Theatre to the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood for mixed repertory on Saturday. Watch for “Mahal Dances,” “’93,” three works-in-progress, plus “All-Time Jazz Revue” by Washington’s youth dancers.

Music

Three times, Fernando de la Mora appears in different programs at Hollywood Bowl this week. Tuesday, with soprano Alessandra Marc, the L.A. Philharmonic and conductor Andrew Robinson, the tenor from Mexico City offers operatic excerpts. Friday and Saturday, with new associate conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya and the orchestra, he is the star of a “Latin Spectacular” with fireworks.

Jazz

Joe Zawinul, as co-leader of Weather Report in the 1970s, has made his mark on modern music. His Zawinul Syndicate, opening at Catalina’s this Tuesday, features the leader’s innovative synthesizer work with an energetic group that combines fusion and World Music with the creativity of jazz.

Pop Music

There’s a high ratio of acts per hour today. The 92.3 the Beat Summer Jam, headlined by Missy Elliott, rocks Irvine Meadows all day, while the Watcha Tour, a Latin counterpart to the Warped Tour, hits the Greek. Meantime, gospel’s Mighty Clouds of Joy trade testimony with singers from other cultures at the Hollywood Bowl.

Theater

“Footloose,” the “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” “Almost Paradise” musical, based on the ‘80s hit film about a free-spirited kid who wakes up a stuffy town, makes national tour stops at Orange County Performing Arts Tuesday through next Sunday and at the Pantages Theatre Aug. 24-Sept. 5.

Robert De Niro is a funny fella in the box-office hit, “Analyze This.” De Niro spoofs his gangster image in this funny comedy about a mobster with anxiety problems who turns to Billy Crystal, as a bewildered shrink, for help. Lisa Kudrow also stars in the Harold Ramis-directed farce, which arrives Tuesday on video.
