Sespe Fire Contained; 34 Acres Burned
About 100 firefighters contained a blaze Monday afternoon that burned 34 acres in the Sespe Wilderness Area over the weekend.
The flames charred grass and chaparral in the Los Padres National Forest, eight miles east of Ojai, said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Joe Pasinato.
The fire began Sunday afternoon and was fully contained by 1 p.m. Monday. Pasinato said campers started the fire by burning their trash outside a campground.
“They thought it was a good, environmental thing to do,” he said, “and the fire got out of control.”
Campers need to be careful at this time of year, Pasinato said. The campers who started Sunday’s blaze could be fined for having an illegal fire.
“We want to remind folks that we are deep in fire season,” he said. “Open flames are not allowed out of developed areas.”
There were no injuries, and no structures were damaged in the blaze. No estimate was available of the cost of putting out the fire.
